Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Capacity by Jeff Turning Heart, Interpreter
7/26/2007
Have you gone on a small getaway vacation and found yourselves crammed into a small vehicle and realized that you may have been a bit over-prepared? I felt like that from time to time on some camping trips when I was younger. I was always told that it’s better to be over than under-prepared.

Camp Experience Was Incredible by David Borlaug, Foundation President

Western 4-H Camp Tip No. 117: When reaching to pick up what appears to be mud on the floor of the lodge building, ask yourself “is there livestock at this camp?” That’s one piece of information I shared with our staff (tongue in cheek) early this summer, as our Foundation assisted with the operation of the 4-H Camp just west of town. Since the first sessions in early June, we have seen over 300 campers come through, exceeding the goal that we set last year with the Western 4-H Camp Association, when we agreed to form a management partnership. This is a 50 percent increase in registrations over last year!

Whistle While You Work by Kevin Kirkey, Interpretive Coordinator
7/12/2007
I can’t believe it; the 4th of July has come and gone. For many of us, Independence Day marks the halfway point of the summer and the sad realization that fall is just around the corner. It seems as if the days have been flying by during the past few weeks. This may be partly due to the bevy of events we have enjoyed as part of Washburn’s 125th and the Interpretive Center’s 10th anniversaries.

We Proceed on… by Kristie Frieze, Executive Director
7/5/2007
My personal Lewis & Clark Expedition is ending and I am sure just like the members of the Expedition over 200 years ago I am filled with mixed emotions. I am happy to be going on to something new and sad to being leaving the life I have known for the last 10 years and the special people who have been part of my daily life during that time.

Shall We Trade? by Gary Anderson, Interpretive Specialist
6/28/2007
Because the Expedition so desperately needed Indian corn and the captains knew that there was a tremendous demand among the natives for metal goods, an interesting exchange system gradually developed between Fort Mandan and the nearby villages. The system involved Indians bringing corn as payment for blacksmith work done at the Fort Mandan forge.

A Taste of Summer in Your Backyard by Alison Zarr, Interpretive Specialist
6/21/2007
My dad has a couple of huge rhubarb plants in his backyard and over the past few years, they have become a way for me to judge the coming and going of the seasons. In the spring time, usually early April, they start to grow regardless of whether there is snow still on the ground or not. By the middle of May (what used to be the end of the school year for me) the rhubarb was huge and ready to be made into my favorite rhubarb cake. It became my favorite flavor of summer.
